7 days in Iceland: Driving on the Ring Road

Iceland may seem like a small country but it isn’t. You can spend weeks exploring the country and there are many ways to organize your trip, all centered on the Ring Road.

Here’s a suggestion of a slightly grueling 7-10 day itinerary, giving a flavor of the different region, each of which is distinct from the others


  • Take the walking tour for a great overview of the city
  • Eat the famous hotdogs from Iceland
  • Visit the famous architectural church

Vik and southern Iceland

  • 2-3 hour drive from Reykjavik along highway 1
  • Pit-stops at Seljalandfoss and Skogafoss are a must
  • Explore the small town of Vik
  • Black sand beach in Vik
  • If you’re lucky, see the Northern lights!

Vatnajokull Glacier

  • Do a glacier hike
  • Visit the Ice Lagoon

East Fjords

Drive along the fjords taking in stunning views

Akyureri and northern Iceland

  • Myvatn is a 2-3 hour drive from Reykjavik along highway 1
  • Visit Dettifoss
  • Thermal springs at Myvatn are a must visit

Sneafellness and western Iceland

  • Conveniently located 2 hours from Reykjavik
  • Visit Kirkjufell, the most photographed spot in Iceland
  • Live in Styksholmur, cute little town and gateway to the West Fjords
  • Journey to the center of the earth at Snafellnessjokull
